It sounds like birding was really just an excuse to indulge your compulsive listing habits . . . but seriously, I think it’s about time. Not only will you get more out of your birding over time but you are participating in something greater by keeping these records as well.
Yes, compulsive listing habits aside, it really does provide a great record, and also helps me become a better birder. And the electronic resources for listing are also incredible! Thanks for reading!
Hi Julia,
If you decide to start keeping electronic lists, I can’t recommend eBird highly enough. All you do is enter what you saw after each outing (as well as relevant information such as how long you were out, where, and how far you walked or drove) and it does the rest. Not only will it keep track of your life list, it will give you location lists (including country, province, county or conservation area), year lists, month lists, individual species lists that show each place you recorded it, etc. You can even upload photos. Best of all, the data helps scientists to record different species’ ranges and movements!
Cheers, and happy listing!
Hi Gillian, Thanks so much for the eBird suggestion! I’m going to give electronic listing a try (though I do enjoy my growing collection of notebooks!). Happy listing and birding to you too!
Julia.
