OPG

OPG Biodiversity is a series of conservation-focused, family-friendly events sponsored by Ontario Power Generation in partnership with Ontario Nature, the Bruce Trail Conservancy, Earth Rangers, LEAF (Local Enhancement and Appreciation of Forests), Rouge Park and Trees Ontario. Its goal is to spread the word about protecting and conserving biodiversity in our urban parklands and forest ecosystems, making it easy for people to get involved with the environment and help fight climate change. OPG Biodiversity is part of OPG’s commitment to conserve, sustain and protect nature.

Cootes Paradise Biodiversity Festival

Location: The Nature Centre, Royal Botanical Gardens Arboretum in Hamilton-Burlington

Directions: The Nature Interpretive Centre is located on the north shore of Cootes Paradise in the Arboretum just off Old Guelph Road in Hamilton (formely Dundas).

Facilities
- The RBG Nature Centre.
- Serves as the north shore trailhead for 12 kilometres of several footpaths along the valleys and shores of Cootes Paradise, features a display room showcasing Project Paradise - the Gardens' innovative marsh restoration venture for Cootes Paradise and lower Grindstone Creek. Wetland plant and wildlife displays, a hands-on activity centre and the Project Paradise Update Board invite visitors to learn about life in Cootes Paradise before heading out to explore the biodiversity of this wetland.
- The centre consists of 3 classrooms and an outdoor amphitheatre
- Marquee tent to house main activities and provide shelter if needed.
- 10' x 10' shelters for additional activities.

Activities, Workshops and Special Speakers
- Hawk Migration Hikes: hikes to view migrating raptors lead by an expert with scopes along the trail system and other interpretive material. The Nature Centre has 3 trail head access with one down to Cootes Paradise, an extraordinary Great Lakes wetland;
- Birds of Prey Program: Birds of Prey Program delivered by the Mountsberg Raptor Centre of the Halton conservation Authority.
- Binocular and Scope Demonstration: with a retail partner such as Bushnell, Vortex, or Nikon explaining how to use binoculars and scopes and what to look for when buying;
- Reptiles and Amphibian Workshop: Ontario Nature Reptile and Amphibian Atlas staff and RBG staff who are doing some work with monitoring and placing transmitters on specimens. RBG has a program that kids track a turtle (a child with a transmitter hides) and they learn what is being done to monitor and protect these species;
- Building Bird Houses: to be put up within the RBG and for local clubs may want them for their reserves;
- Seed Packets: Free native seed packets (one per family) with plants that attract butterflies.
