Experience the Thickson’s Woods Nature Reserve

Experience the Thickson’s Woods Nature Reserve

2026.06.23

Virtually explore Thickson’s Woods, a birding hotspot in Whitby. Ontario Nature is raising funds to support the transfer of 10 hectares of land from Thickson’s Woods Land Trust to Ontario Nature and subsequent stewardship, which will create our first transit-accessible and urban nature reserve.

Thickson’s Woods is a rare gem: a migratory bird stopover and beloved urban green space that is transit accessible.

For decades the Thickson’s Woods Land Trust has protected and stewarded this special place. They have cared for its rich and diverse habitats including mixed forest, open meadow, a provincially significant wetland and 400 metres of Lake Ontario shoreline. This 10-hectare birding hotspot is an oasis packed with biodiversity, supporting 75 rare and at-risk species, and is the last remnant of old-growth white pines on the north shore of Lake Ontario.

Thickson’s Woods Land Trust has entrusted Ontario Nature with this remarkable place, and together, we need to raise funds to support this transfer and then steward the land in perpetuity.

During the webinar, Ontario Nature’s Executive Director Andrés Jiménez Monge, Nature Reserves Manager, Marcus Maddalena, will lead attendees on a virtual tour of the incredible Thickson’s Woods.
