About

Sustainably managed forests protect wildlife habitat, Indigenous people’s homelands and economic prosperity for forestry-dependent communities.

Ontario Nature is a long-time supporter of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certification system as part of a solution to resolving competing demands on our forests. FSC is an international certification and labelling system dedicated to promoting environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial and economically prosperous management of the world’s forests. FSC has developed a voluntary system of forest management certification and product labelling that enables people to identify responsibly sourced wood, paper and other forest products.

What We Are Doing

  • We regularly engage FSC certification audits as interested stakeholders and experts. These audits assess and validate a company’s qualification for certification. We provide our observations on how forestry practices are likely affecting species at risk and other conservation-related requirements in the standard.
  • We are participating as a member of FSC International’s Sustainable Intensification Working Group which meets with economic, social and environmental representatives from across the world to consider and make recommendations on how increasing demand for forestry products can be achieved while protecting biodiversity and benefitting local communities.
