Reaction to Canada’s Speech From the Throne

Media Statement: September 23, 2020

In response to Canada’s throne speech delivered today, Ontario Nature commends the government’s renewed commitments to climate action, protected areas and reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples.

Climate action is to be a cornerstone of the government’s job creation plans, recognizing that globally, consumers and investors are demanding meaningful steps to address threats posed by climate change to human well-being and the environment.

The COVID pandemic has underlined the vital interconnections between access to nature and human health and happiness. Acknowledging that nature-based solutions are critical in adapting to and fighting climate change, Ontario Nature supports the government’s commitment to protect 25 percent of our lands and waters by 2025.

We also welcome the government’s commitment to walk the shared path of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, and fully support the government’s intent to introduce legislation this year to implement the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

Ontario Nature looks forward to working with the government on these important initiatives as we move from talk to action.
