Youth Leading Climate Action: Wetlands Walk at Huron Natural Area

September 27 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Join us for a youth-led event where we’ll explore the vital role wetlands play as nature-based climate solutions at Huron Natural Area. Through an interactive walk, participants will learn and discuss how wetlands help combat climate change by storing carbon, preventing flooding, and protecting biodiversity. Led by youth leaders of the Ontario Nature Youth Council, this is an opportunity for youth in the Kitchener community to learn how to advocate and inspire action to protect these crucial ecosystems.

This event will help mitigate and adapt to climate change by raising awareness on the essential role wetlands play as nature-based climate solutions. Wetlands mitigate climate change by storing carbon, preventing flooding, and protecting Kitchener’s biodiversity and water quality. Educating the community about wetlands increases awareness of how protecting natural spaces can improve public health by reducing climate impacts, such as extreme heat and poor air quality. Through a youth-led community event in Kitchener, local youth and community members will be educated about the values of wetland protection, and become empowered to lead wetland advocacy efforts, fostering local climate action and stewardship.
