The STATE of the LAKE, with guest speakers Mark Dorriesfield and Brett Tregunno

North Durham Nature and the Scugog Lake Stewards are hosting this special talk that will focus on aquatic plants and birds in Lake Scugog. These two organizations have invited Mark Dorriesfield to explain the importance of Lake Scugog to bird populations and Brett Tregunno, who will share his expertise about aquatic plants in our lake. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the amazing ecology that is near and dear to the residents of Scugog Township. Brett will explain the key findings from Kawartha Conservation’s 2025 study which sampled aquatic plants in 400 locations around the lake. Mark will explore some of the many bird species that depend on Lake Scugog for survival.

Brett is an Aquatic Biologist who has been with Kawartha Conservation for the past 17 years. He helps to plan, manage and monitor the lakes, rivers and wetlands in the Kawarthas. Mark a long time ‘birder’, studied Wildlife Biology and Conservation at the University of Guelph. For years he has conducted wildlife surveys throughout Manitoba, Ontario, and the American Southwest and now works as an Ecological Consultant in Southern Ontario.
