Session 1: Creating Conservation Easement Agreements – a 5 part webinar series: Conservation Easement Agreements – Leveraging what We Have Learned

October 15 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

It’s hard to believe that organizations across Ontario have been protecting land using Conservation Easement Agreements (CEAs) for 30 years! The Ontario Conservation Land Act came into effect in 1994, enabling the registration of CEAs on private lands. Land Trusts and conservation authorities now have 30 years of experience creating, registering, managing, amending and enforcing these agreements.

We invite you to join us for a series of five webinars to reflect on lessons learned about CEAs over the past thirty years.

Session 1, Creating Conservation Easement Agreements is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on October 15th, 2025. This webinar will focus on the creation of CEAs as legal contracts and as instruments registered on land titles. This initial webinar will be informed by the experience of land trusts and conservation authorities with the interpretation, monitoring and enforcement of CEAs over recent years.

Session 2 on November 10th will focus on the responsibilities of CEA holders in acquiring CEAs, issuing donation receipts and in managing CEAs as important organizational assets.

Session 3 on December 9th will address issues and best practices for the enforcement and amendment of CEAs.

Sessions 4 and 5 will be held in January and February, 2026.

If you or your organization are involved in CEA development and stewardship, please join us for this important learning opportunity!

Webinars will be organized and led by Paul Peterson, a lawyer with many years experience working with land trusts, governments and landowners on private land conservation projects and issues. Other presenters will add their experience and insights.

This webinar series is supported by the Ecological Gifts Program of Environment and Climate Change Canada. Logistical support is provided by the Ontario Land Trust Alliance. For additional information please contact Morgan at Morgan.Roblin@olta.ca.
