Don’t forget Rosalie Edge and her early conservation work. She also founded the present day Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in east-central Pennsylvania, a must visit location for all birders! (see http://ecotopia.org/ecology-hall-of-fame/rosalie-edge/biography/)
Thanks for mentioning this, Brete. Rosalie Edge looks fascinating! And so forward-thinking! I plan on continuing the women-in-birding theme…
Sarah — Thanks so much for this info, and the link. This is an incredible story! How tragic that she died one month after the book’s debut, at the age of 32! Here’s an interesting article/review of America’s Other Audubon in the LA Times http://articles.latimes.com/2012/apr/29/entertainment/la-ca-birds-20120430. Looks like it’s published by Princeton Architectural Press… might have to get one myself!
How about Genevieve Jones? I came across her nest and egg illustrations (Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio) while browsing the Smithsonian digital archives some years ago—really beautiful stuff. Jones was a young amateur ornithologist and artist who, after seeing Audubon’s lithographs at the 1876 World’s Fair, was inspired to create her own version featuring the nests and eggs of her state that Audubon had omitted. It’s a fascinating (and tragic) story, and her illustrations were recently republished in America’s Other Audubon. I would love to get my hands on a copy!
