Youngsters in Thunder Bay got to embrace their inner foodie at the Food Frenzy event at the Kinsmen Northwood Centre on Wednesday afternoon.

Ash Young, the city’s supervisor of cultural development and events, said they jumped on board the city’s Youth Week schedule and hosted the event for youth between the ages of 12 to 19. More than 10 exhibits illustrated where our food comes from and the many different ways it is produced, prepared and consumed.

Children got a chance to make a smoothie in a blender that was powered with the pedalling of a bicycle with Roots to Harvest. Science North was on hand to make gummy bears from fruit juice and Ontario Nature showed the many edible wild plants that are in the area.

Lakehead University flew a drone and explained how it is used in agriculture. Our Kids Count had children making edible energy balls. Eco Superior talked about our growing zone and the different plants that can or cannot grow in out climate and Hauth Henna Designs showed how natural, food-based colourings are used in creating beautiful henna tattoos.

The event was free of charge and open to everyone.
