SUMMARY:Habitat Restoration at George G. Newton Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:Join Ontario Nature and Huron Bruce Nature this spring at Ontario Nature’s George G. Newton Nature Reserve near Goderich to restore the understory of a mature deciduous forest through a garlic mustard pull and native wildflower planting event. Learn to identify and manage invasive plants and contribute to the long-term protection of this important refuge for wild species! \nHuron Bruce Nature (HBN) has cared for the George G Newton Nature Reserve since 1996 creating and maintaining trails and working with partners to return former farmland to a natural state. In addition to regular upkeep\, each year HBN organizes several work parties to remove invasive plant species. \nGarlic mustard is a fast-spreading\, invasive herb brought to Canada from Europe in the early 1800s. Garlic mustard produces abundant seeds that are easily spread by humans and animals and can remain viable for many years. It releases chemicals in the soil that disrupt natural processes\, preventing native plants from growing. Several areas of the George G. Newton Reserve are heavily infested by garlic mustard\, and volunteers from HBN work hard each year to manage these infestations. To date\, results have been very encouraging\, with significant decrease in garlic mustard density and regrowth of native species seen throughout the property. Join us to help prevent the spread of garlic mustard into the nature reserve! \nSchedule:\n9:30-9:45am – Registration\n9:45-10:00am – Land Acknowledgement and Welcome\n10:00am-12:00pm- Invasive Removal\n12:30-1 pm- Lunch break (please bring your own lunch\, light snacks and water will be provided by Ontario Nature)\n1:00-3:00pm – Native species planting\n3:00-3:30pm- Educational tour of property and goodbyes! \nRefreshments: Please bring your own refillable water bottle and lunch if you are attending both sessions. Water and light snacks will be provided by Ontario Nature. \nClothing: Please wear a hat\, closed-toed shoes and long pants. Long shirts\, and knee pads are recommended. The event will happen rain or shine. \nDirections: The nature reserve lies southeast of Goderich\, between Highways 8 and 21. From the hamlet of Holmesville\, take Cut Line Road west to Porter’s Hill (marked by a red schoolhouse on a hill). Turn north on Porter’s Hill Line (also called the 6th Concession) and proceed to the next intersection. The nature reserve is on the southeast corner of this crossroads. Turn east onto Kitchigami Road and park along the south side of the road. The property is marked by a kiosk sign and civic address marker number 35913\, approximately 60 metres to the east of the intersection and can be found on Google Maps. We kindly ask that guests carpool where possible. \nAccessibility: The event will include a round-trip hike (1 kms) carrying equipment between 5 and 10 lbs. The event will include physical removal of garlic mustard plants and planting of wildflowers that involves kneeling and bending at your own pace. Please let \nstaff know if you have difficulty carrying heavy objects. All equipment will be provided. An outhouse will be available at the entrance. \nNote: Please arrive early for registration as we will start promptly at 10:00a.m. Be prepared for a day spent outdoors. \nMake sure to dress for the weather and wear sturdy closed-toed shoes or rain boots. We will be going ahead rain or shine! Please bring a hat\, bug jacket\, raincoat (if needed)\, re-fillable water bottle\, and binoculars if you have them. \nContact for more information: Melissa Thomas at melissat@ontarionature.org or 416-894-0884 \nThis event was made possible thanks to funding from TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. \nBy participating in the event\, you agree to abide by the Event Code of Conduct.

SUMMARY:Celebrating the Expansion of Sauble Dunes Nature Reserve
DESCRIPTION:You are invited to join us on Sunday\, May 24 at 11:00 a.m. for a special tour of the newly expanded Sauble Dunes Nature Reserve. \nThanks to the incredible support of our members and partners\, Ontario Nature has successfully protected an additional property within this remarkable dune ecosystem on the Saugeen Bruce Peninsula. Located inland from the eastern shore of Lake Huron\, the Sauble Dunes Nature Reserve is one of the best remaining complexes of beach ridges\, sand plains\, sand dunes and swales in the region. \nThis nature reserve lies within the Sauble Falls North Area of Natural and Scientific Interest\, a globally significant landscape that supports rare coastal dune and wetland habitats. The area is home to several provincially rare plant species\, including long‑leaved reed grass\, dwarf lake iris\, and stiff yellow flax. These habitats also provide refuge for a variety of wildlife\, including the provincially threatened Massasauga rattlesnake\, as well as birds such as the red‑shouldered hawk and Cooper’s hawk. \nOntario Nature staff and local naturalists will guide an interpretive walk through the nature reserve to showcase this unique landscape and the species that depend on it. Along the way\, you will learn more about the ecological importance of Great Lakes coastal dunes and how your support helped make this conservation success possible. \nSchedule:\n11:00am: Welcome and Land Acknowledgement\n11:30am: Tour of the Property\n1:00pm: Lunch\n1:30pm: Closing \nSauble Dunes Nature Reserve is the Territory of the Anishinabek Nation\, known collectively as the Saugeen Ojibway Nation\, the traditional keepers of this land. Ontario Nature is grateful to share the responsibility of caring for this special place. \nSee the Wildlife We Spotted on our Trail Camera \nAdditional Details\n– This event will take place rain or shine\n– We will be walking off-trail on uneven terrain for approximately 1km through sandy and natural areas\n– Sturdy footwear or rainboots is recommended as conditions may be uneven in dune and forest areas\n– We understand that plans change\, please let us know if you can no longer attend so we can offer your spot to others\n– A reminder email with additional details will be sent to participants in early May \n– Water\, drinks\, and a light lunch will be provided\, but please bring a reusable water bottle \nWashroom facilities will be available. \nSpace is limited. Please register by Sunday\, May 18. \nIf you have questions about the event or accessibility\, please contact Kayla at kaylas@ontarionature.org or 1-800-440-2366 ext. 242.\n \nThe property is located about one-kilometer due west of Sauble Falls. There is minimal parking at the nature reserve access point; stay tuned for parking information and directions in your pre-event email! \nThis project was undertaken with the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Federal Department of Environment and Climate Change\, as well as through the support of the Ministry of Environment\, Conservation\, and Parks’ Greenlands Conservation Partnership program\, Echo Foundation\, Waterloo Region Nature\, and many Ontario Nature members. We are grateful to everyone who contributed towards safeguarding this incredible place forever. \nBy participating in the event\, you agree to abide by the Event Code of Conduct.
