Working Together for Ontario’s Wetlands Webinar

November 22, 2022 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Canada contains about one-quarter of wetlands globally, and one-quarter of Canada’s wetlands are found in Ontario. Therefore, our province has a critical role in wetland conservation at a local, national and global scale. Despite this, Ontario continues to experience ongoing wetland losses. Join Sarah Hasenack, Ontario Nature’s Wetland Conservation Intern, as she hosts a webinar about these critical ecosystems and what can be done to protect them.

During this webinar, Dr. Anne Bell, Ontario Nature’s Director of Conservation and Education, will highlight key wetland values and the major threats Ontario’s wetlands face today. The practice of wetland offsetting will be introduced, with a discussion of how it may accelerate wetland loss if it’s not approached with extreme caution. She will also address the dire implications of recently proposed Bill 23 for Ontario’s wetlands.

This session will include a discussion of the role each of us can play in protecting Ontario’s remaining wetland ecosystems, including a presentation from guest speaker Jeremy Milloy who brings a story of a community taking action to stop a development proposal threatening a provincially significant wetland in Kingston. Ontario Nature’s Giving Tuesday 2022 initiative, which focuses on supporting the wetlands campaign, will also be featured.
