Woody vegetation removal at Forks of the Credit Provincial Park
November 2 @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Where: Forks of the Credit Provincial Park.
Meet in the main parking lot west of McLaren Road between Forks of the Credit Road and Charleston Sideroad in Caledon.
Timing: TBA – feel free to arrive later.
Just connect with Don Scallen at 905 876 6180 when you arrive, and he’ll direct you to the field of operations.
Tools: Manual cutting tools and gloves. Power tools are verboten.
Why we are doing this: The meadows of Forks of the Credit Provincial Park are home to species at-risk including bobolinks, meadowlarks and monarch butterflies. Locally uncommon birds like clay-colored sparrows and grasshopper sparrows breed here and at-risk bank swallows forage on the abundant insect life. Bluebirds also regularly nest at FCPP as well. The meadow wildflowers, including abundant asters and goldenrod, provide pollen and nectar for tremendous numbers of insects including honeybees, bumblebees and solitary bees.
Maintaining a portion of the park as meadow habitat will allow these creatures to continue to thrive. This goal aligns with the park’s management plan. We are partnering with the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry on this project.
Departure time is also open. If you can only donate an hour or two of your time, that is entirely fine. Obviously if you plan to stay longer, you’ll want to bring some food and water.
