Requiem for our Quinte Wetlands
December 10, 2022 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Date: Saturday, December 10th
Time: 4 to 5 p.m.
Where: Meet at the Market Square in Belleville (behind Belleville City Hall, 169 Front Street) to begin the procession.
What to Bring: Cell phone flashlight and/regular flashlight and the same or new sign protesting against the Bill.
Details of the Event: The procession will leave from Market Square and head for the Belleville sign in front of City Hall then continue down the river and across the Belleville Footbridge – photos to be taken along the way. Posters with the names of each of the 99 wetlands in the Quinte region that are threatened by Bill 23 will be distributed and displayed for the photos. We are hoping to find someone to play music for the procession, either bagpipes or maybe Louisiana jazz (like a funeral). Volunteers?! The procession will be led by pall bearers carrying a smallish cardboard casket. At the end of the procession, people holding the wetland signs will place them in the casket at the Footbridge with a sprinkle flower petals. The pall bearers will then place the casket in our “hearse” and it will be taken to Todd Smith’s office and placed (interred) at his front door. A sign on the casket will remind him that the fate of these wetlands and the life within them, lie at his door.
If you play the bagpipes or horns, we need you! Or, if you would be interested speaking about the impacts of Bill 23, we would love to have your voice at the event. Please contact Lori at lborthwick@sympatico.ca to volunteer for either of these specific roles or for more information.
Hope to see you there!! “Together we are stronger and our voice more powerful.”
