Invasive Shrub Removal – Autumn Olive, Buckthorn, Barberry and Honeysuckles (Morning)

October 3 @ 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Every year, rare takes on ecological restoration initiatives to enhance and rehabilitate the unique native habitats of this urban land trust. Join us and help conserve native biodiversity through the removal of invasive species! Volunteers can expect to learn invasive plant identification as well as proper removal techniques. This is a great opportunity for those looking to gain in field experience with ecological restoration and become more familiar with the flora of southern Ontario.

We will be removing invasive species such as Autumn Olive, Buckthorn, Barberry, White Mulberry, and Invasive Honeysuckles that outcompete native vegetation, creating large monocultures. This reduces the functionality of the ecosystem and reduces the number of species that area can support. The methods for removal of all invasive shrubs are similar, through the use of an extratigator or pullerbear and shovel to rip/ dig out shrubs at the root. Removed trees are then piled up, with roots off the ground to dry out in the sun.

Instruction on species ID, removal techniques and its impact on native ecosystems will be provided.
