Nature Guelph Speaker Series – Martyn Obbard: In this talk Martyn will explore the evidence for effects of climate change on polar bears and address the question “Is there a tipping point for polar bears?”
Dr. Martyn Obbard is an Emeritus Research Scientist with the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry, and adjunct professor at Trent University (Peterborough, Ontario). He retired in 2016 after a 32-yr career with the ministry, including 27 in the research section studying black bears and polar bears in Ontario. He completed his M.Sc. (1977) and Ph.D. (1983) at the University of Guelph. Dr. Obbard is a member of the IUCN-Species Survival Commission’s Polar Bear Specialist Group, and was a long-time member and former Chair of the Canadian Federal/Provincial/ Territorial Polar Bear Technical Committee. He is Vice-President (Americas) of the International Association for Bear Research and Management, and is a member of Ontario Nature, the Brodie Club, and the Peterborough Field Naturalists.
