Carden Alvar Butterfly and Dragonfly Counts in Their 25th Year
July 23 @ 8:00 am - July 24 @ 6:00 pm
Bob Bowles founded and started the Carden Alvar Butterfly and Dragonfly Counts back in 1998 after he compiled a species lists for butterflies and dragonflies of the area. Bowles was amazed that the number of species and the abundance of some of the species in that area and wanted to start a long-term monitoring study of these species and how they are changed over the years.
This year the Carden Alvar Butterfly Count will be held on Saturday, July 23 and the Carden Alvar Dragonfly and Damselfly Count will be held on Sunday, July 24, both within the Carden Alvar official count circle. We welcome anyone interested in these counts to take part this year
The counts will be based at the Robert L. Bowles Nature Centre which is within the count circle on the east side of Simcoe County. You can register for these counts at robertlbowlesnaturecentre@gmail.com We are looking for team leaders to help interested naturalists learn more about these interesting insects. We also welcome beginners who want to learn more about butterflies and dragonflies and their relationships to plants and other insects in nature. Beginners will be assigned to teams with a leader knowledgeable about the area and the different species we may encounter during the day.
Please register with June Crinnion at the Robert L Bowles Nature Centre and she will provide you with details for the counts. There are also some campsites that may be available at the centre for those wishing to stay over for both counts.
