Experience the diverse flora and fauna of Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve!
Event Date: Saturday, May 31
Location: Kinghurst Forest Nature Reserve, in Grey County
Parking: 175195 Concession Rd 6, Elmwood, ON
Designated as an Area of Natural and Scientific Interest (ANSI), Kinghurst Forest is a special place that offers the naturalist a unique glimpse into Ontario’s natural past. It encompasses 356 hectares (880 acres) of mature maple-beech forest that is a rare example of pre-settlement woodlands in southern Ontario.
We hope to see some of the unique species found on the property including red-backed salamander, eastern bluebird, Jack-in-the-pulpit, maidenhair fern, northern parula and wood frog!
Your family and friends are welcome to join knowledgeable field naturalists for a day of guided hikes and hands-on species identification as we experience the diverse flora and fauna of this exceptional property.
Three guided hikes will be offered on the day of the event:
Morning (9:00 AM – 11:00 AM)
- Birding Hike #1 led by David Turner
- Birding Hike #2 led by Deane Atherton
Lunch Break (11:00 AM – 12:00 PM)
Afternoon (12:30 PM – 2:30 PM)
- Botany Hike led by Jeannine Kralt
- Plants & Insects Hike led by James Kamstra
People are welcome to conduct independent surveys on the nature reserve May 31st and June 1st. Please contact our Nature Reserves Stewardship Coordinator (contact details below) for a species checklist and a map of the property. You can also make your own field notes and send them to Ontario Nature. Staff will be on site to conduct surveys.
Be prepared for buggy conditions and exercise tick precautions. Portable washroom will be available on site. Please bring your own lunch to enjoy during the break. Light snacks and water will be provided on site. Please do not block the entrance when you park.
