Project Title: Wallaceburg Sycamore Woods

Region: Carolinian West

Number of Participants: 5 volunteers

Date: July 2005 – June 2006

Group Name: Sydenham Field Naturalists

Project Description:

A small (11 acre) but very significant woodlot near Wallaceburg was about to be cleared by a new owner. By working closely with the municipality for a severance, the Sydenham Field Naturalists were able to preserve the woods. The woods contain old growth characteristics and a high density of American sycamore, Shumard oak and swamp white oak. A prairie buffer is being developed.

At least two or three people are required to devote a large amount of time to such a project. It is much more involved than it would initially appear.

Funding Source: corporations, foundations, Ontario Nature’s Carolinian West member groups, individuals.

Approximate cost: $7,000.

Project partners: Municipality of Chatham-Kent
